USB Guide Port Interface Review

Price: 99.95 USD
Manufacturer: Shoestring Astron.
USB Guide Port Interface – Product Warranty: One year
Type of Product: Astro-Imaging > Imaging Accessories

This handy device enables autoguiding with the Orion Atlas and Sirius EQ-G GoTo and SkyView Pro GoTo mounts from a computer. You’ll need a PC or laptop computer, a CCD camera suitable for autoguiding (such as the Orion StarShoot Deep Space Imaging Camera), autoguiding software (like MaxIm DL or MaxIm DL Essentials), and a guide scope. The GPUSB adapter plugs directly into a USB port on your computer. Using an RJ-12 cable (10′ cable included), the adapter connects to the autoguider port of your mount, enabling the autoguiding camera to “talk” to the mount through the computer and through the GPUSB. This adapter requires no external power source, since it receives its power via USB from your computer. For software packages that use ASCOM to interface to the GPUSB, you can download the ASCOM platform from ascom-standards.org, then download and install the GPUSB ASCOM driver.

Orion SteadyStar LF Adaptive Optics Guider Review

Orion SteadyStar LF Adaptive Optics Guider Review

Review of Orion SteadyStar LF Adaptive Optics Guider.

Price: 2,099.95 USD
Manufacturer: Orion
Orion SteadyStar LF Adaptive Optics Guider – Product Warranty: One year
Product Type: Astro-Imaging > Imaging Accessories

If you’re serious about large format astrophotography, Orion brings you a new way to assure the best tracking performance possible, even in adverse conditions. The SteadyStar LF Adaptive Optics Guider (AO) makes any imaging-capable mount, even if a modest one, perform more effectively. Precise tracking is one of the most critical facets of astrophotography and this tracking is limited to the accuracy of your mount, plus external factors like wind and atmospheric seeing conditions. The SteadyStar LF AO Guider overcomes these limitations and challenges and takes control with super fast and accurate guiding. The SteadyStar LF Adaptive Optics Guider is ideal for use with large format CCD and DSLR sensors with its larger 50mm diameter optical window. The larger window provides full filed illumination to take full advantage of devices equipped with larger sensors, such as 35mm format CCD cameras. Traditional autoguiding involves moving the mount and telescope, along with all of your attached imaging accessories to correct for tracking errors. Furthermore, autoguiding can typically only make a single correction every couple of seconds or so; during that time your tracking is vulnerable to periodic error from your mount, wind, and atmospheric seeing conditions.

Orion SteadyStar Adaptive Optics Guider w/Rotator Review

Orion SteadyStar Adaptive Optics Guider w/Rotator Review

Orion SteadyStar Adaptive Optics Guider w/Rotator – Product Warranty: One year
Product Type: Astro-Imaging > Imaging Accessories

A new way to autoguide and track, the SteadyStar AO Guider with Field Rotator is a powerful and versatile companion to your telescope, mount and camera. The built-in Field Rotator allows you to move the SteadyStar’s off-axis prism to locate a guide star or to change the imaging camera orientation. It also enables long exposure imaging with motorized altitude-azimuth mounts. And with the fast adaptive optics guiding, it turns any image capable mount (Alt-Az or EQ) into a more effective one, yielding better tracking. The SteadyStar AO Guider with Field Rotator not only makes rapid and accurate tracking corrections to deliver pinpoint stars, it also allows you to rotate the camera and off-axis guider without disturbing the focus. That makes finding a guide star much easier. Additionally, the SteadyStar AO Guider with Field Rotator is an ideal solution for imagers with fork altitude-azimuth mounts, including those used with popular catadioptric telescopes. Since Alt-Az mounts cannot move in arcs to match the apparent movement of the sky, the field rotator will do that for you. There’s no need to purchase a heavy equatorial wedge for your fork mount. The SteadyStar’s broad compatibility works with most cameras including any Orion CCD camera as well as DSLRs, and most autoguiders including the StarShoot AutoGuider. A filter wheel can be added between the SteadyStar and imaging cameras without adding to the backfocus.
